The BBC Media Action is the charitable arm of the World Service established by the BBC. The BBC Media Action Nigeria which tackles poverty, human rights and health issues through creative use of  the media is seeking to recruit experienced individuals who will join the Team in Abuja.

 

The Positions are Abuja based but may involve travelling to the focal states in Nigeria.  The contract duration is expected to be one year with a start date of January 2013 and a probation period of 3 months

 

Position: Producer/Trainer

 

(Salary range is from N224.0000.00 (per month) but does not include moving or relocation allowance to duty station).

 

Duties

  • The successful candidate will be spending up to one month at a time away from base delivering various training activities at partner radio stations across Nigeria, and working with relevant partner organisations such as radio/TV stations, civil society organisations, state agencies, development/project partners.
  • Will train and support radio station staff and other trainees in a wide range of programme production skills and lake responsibility for designing training materials and methods of evaluation.
  • Will also offer on going mentoring support to trainees when based in project states and from Abuja as well as coordinate the activities of the project training team

 

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Extensive production background at a senior level, preferably in the area of interactive radio/television, behaviour change communication, spot production and health related journalism
  • understanding of Nigerian media industry and working practices as applied by private and public stations and through understanding of best practices in media training
  • Strong understanding of the role of communication in development.
  • A good understanding of Hausa Language, ability to translate into both English and Hausa Language (will be an advantage).
  • Strong editorial judgment
  • Proven ability to analyse and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and driving constant improvement in output.
  • Experience in planning training courses and training of journalists, and willingness to develop skills in these areas
  • experience in training media practitioners on programme production
  • experience in  electronic media programme production especially in development issues

 

    Qualification:

  • Educated at first degree in Humanities, Social or Management Sciences or in any related field

Duties

  • Talk Your Own is a new weekly magazine programme produced by BBC Media Action.
  • Each programme will cover governance issues in a exciting and contemporary style with the voices of those directly involved in national governance events, to provide listeners with a concise round-up of all the main governance issues and to provide a forum for listeners to hold those responsible to account.
  • The   Producer will join the team working on Talk Your Own magazine programme.
  • They will work alongside other teams across genres including. Magazine, Debate and Drama The emphasis of the job is very much on storytelling and creativity as well as on craft and production skills.
  • Carry   out   extensive   research,   gathering   ideas   for  programme   items,   finding appropriate contributors along with new and archive material.
  • Take part in creative development sessions – coming up with original ideas and building on existing ideas.
  • Develop skills in content production across all platforms (radio, online, social media ) and brief presenters and contributors.
  • Operate   technical   equipment   intended   for  self-operation  –  (audio   recording
  • equipment, online editing etc).
  • Develop an understanding of audiences, and how different programmes respond to
  • different audience needs
  • Ensure  that  all  programme  material  is  completed,   ready for transmission  or distribution, m accordance with the agreed schedule.
  • Prepare Production reports.

  • Ability to create original ideas and tell compelling stories and analyse information and find the engaging stones.
  • A resilient, flexible and adaptable approach in the face of rapidly changing circumstances and shifts and ability to work well with colleagues and a diverse range of contacts.
  • Demonstrate   creativity with programme formats. And strong interest in working number of different media platforms (radio. online .TV).
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Can maintain personal effectiveness by managing own emotions in the face of pressure, set backs or when dealing with provocative situations. Can demonstrate an approach to work that is characterised by commitment, motivation and energy.
