Position: Research Clinician/Head of Clinical Services (MRC Keneba)
This position offers exceptional opportunities for career progression by combining leadership responsibilities with research experience and training at the internationally pre-eminent MRC Unit. The Gambia (www.mrc.gm). The Unit’s nutrition research is run in partnership with the MRC International Nutrition Group (www.ing.mrc.ac.uk) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and based at the rural field station, MRC Keneba.
MRC Keneba is a 3 hour journey from the coast and the main Unit at MRC Fajara. The MRC has carried out nutritional research in Keneba and the surrounding villages for over 60 years. Although the location of the Unit is remote and rural considering its location. Keneba has world-class laboratory and other facilities necessary for high-quality field research and the delivery of a comprehensive primary health care service.
The Research Clinician/Head of Clinical Services will take overall medical responsibility for the Clinical Services in Keneba (reporting to the Head of Station). S/he will also have excellent opportunities for participating in the research agenda both through participation in on-going studies and by generating their own research agenda. This may offer an opportunity to register for an MD or PhD.
We seek someone with:
- MB, BS.
- Minimum of FWACP Part 1 or equivalent in Internal Medicine / Paediatrics/Obstetrics.
- Experience of staff management.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Good IT skills (Microsoft Word Excel. E-mail, search engines e.g. PUBMED)
- Commitment to working in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal / written communication skills
- A flexible and well-organized approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines
- Ability to deal sensitively with patients.
- Attentiveness to detail
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Willingness to be on-call and work outside the normal working hours.
- Practical experience of health research in developing countries
- Willingness to live in a remote rural location
Salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience. The minimum salary for E1 is 739, 162 Dalasis ($24, 638) per annum before tax. The successful candidate with their FWACP Part 2 will be in Occupational Group E2. The minimum salary for E2 is 1, 036,819 Dalasis ($34,560) per annum before tax. Please note that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the USD figure quoted is just given as a guide.
For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, displacement allowance for spouse and children, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.
The appointment will be for 3 years in the first instance.
