Africare, a US, based NGO established in 1970, has been working in Nigeria since 1978 and is currently operating community-based development projects in 19 African countries. Africare has long standing experience in the design and delivery of technical, training, material and financial assistance to self-help efforts in the fields of Health, HIV & AIDS: Agriculture & Food Security: Water, Sanitation & Hygiene: Natural Resource Management: Micro-enterprise: Civil-Society Strengthening: and Good Governance. Health programs are important to Africare’s work in virtually all countries where it operates and constitute about half of Africare’s overall development assistance efforts. In Nigeria, Africare’s has its main office in Lagos and field offices in Abuja, Asaba Port Harcourt, Uyo and Benin, with smaller satellite offices in Bayelsa and Cross Rivers State.
Africare Nigeria is looking to hire program officers to fill positions in Abuja, Benin and Lagos as two new projects commence. The Youth Life Skills Development Project will engage secondary school students in a program that leverages sports to teach literacy, health and social development skills. The program is a one year pilot with expectation for further funding
The Malaria Control and Health Promotion in Flood Affected Populations Project aims to reduce the prevalence and mortality lelaled to malaria in communities in Kogi, Edo and Delta states Specific targets relate to the use of LLINs, ACTs, RDS and IRS in line with the National Malaria Control Program targets from the 2009-2013 National Strategy. This is a six month initial intervention

Vacancies exist for the following positions
Position: Project Officer Youth Life Skills Development Project (Abuja)
Report to: Senior Support Program Manager as well as the Country Director for Africare Nigeria.
Overall Responsibilities:
The project officer will be responsible for leading a team that ensures that the curriculum is appropriately administered to students in participating schools.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree from a reputable university and knowledge of the game of basketball and current happenings and trends at the international, FIBA and NBA level
- Five years of experience working in a professional environment with reporting lines and structured communication and work flows. Experience with an international NGO is preferred.
- Five years’ experience of playing basketball competitively at the secondary and tertiary or professional level. Informal competitive experience counts.
- Quick learner with a good grasp of development issues in Nigeria like health, literacy and the dearth of social skills among youth
Position: Project Assistant Youth Life Skills Development Project
Location: Abuja
The Project Assistant will work under the supervision of Program officer and assist with all activities. A detailed job description is available online
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in PHE, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or related fields.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in providing support and coordination of youths on field-based projects
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with Social/ Sports, Community development, and/or health
- Experience writing program reports
- Experience in documentation of success stories
- Demonstrated understanding of field-based approaches, Demonstrated skills in the use of electronic databases.
- Excellent organizational communication and English-language writing skills, Ability to work successfully with minimal guidance, Able to work with young people, Must be friendly and accessible
