Background
The BBC Media Action (formerly BBC World Services Trust) in Nigeria, the BBC’s international development charity which tackles poverty, human rights and health issues through creative use of the media is seeking to recruit experienced individuals who will join the Team based in Abuja. The Projects aim to address and improve the numerous health and good governance related issues plaguing women and children as well as other citizens in our society through media development activities which will be designed to boost the capacity of media partners in the focal states to serve the public interest.
The positions are Abuja based but may involve travelling to the focal states in Nigeria. The contract duration is expected to be one year for production positions with a probation period and 6 months for the consultant position. Salary will be based on experience but does not include moving or relocation allowance to duty station.
Position: Consultant Project Manager (ESMPIN) – 6 month
The short term Project Manager who will join the USAID supported Expanded Marketing Projects in Nigeria (ESMPIN). The ESMPIN Project aims to address and improve the numerous health challenges plaguing women and children in our society through media development activities which will be designed to boost the capacity of media partners in the focal states to serve the public interest. The Project Manager will be charged with responsible for managing the ESMPIN project.
The Project Manager post is Abuja based but may involve occasional travel to any of the fifteen (15) focal states which include 8 Northern (Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Bauchi) and 7 Southern States ( Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Delta, Edo, Rivers). The contract duration is expected to be six (6) months and a start date in August. 2012. Salary will be based on experience.
Time Frame
The consultant will be engaged exclusively by the BBC Media Acton for a Six (6) month period.
Duties:
- To deliver the ESMPIN project on time, to budget and to the highest standards in terms of quality, effectiveness, impact and relevance, meeting objectives dearly defined in the project proposal.
- To ensure Training, Production and Research teams meet agreed objectives on all managed projects.
- To adhere strictly to the letter of the ESMPIN contract, including procurement and visibility guidelines and conditions by which the project is bound.
- To identify, together with the production, training and research teams, media formats which are likely to contribute to an effective media response to health issues of women and children.
- Maintaining effective communication between BBCMA and other consortium members and partners.
- To identify, together with the training team, activities which will create a sustainable media response to health issues of women and children at state and national level.
- To identify and provide, in consultation with The Senior Projects Manager (SPM) and Country Director (CD), leadership, on the scope and impact of the project, especially acting upon opportunities to achieve objectives and outcomes
Expected Deliverables
- Day-to-day management of the ESMPIN Project
- Preparation of required documentation of all activities and information
- Organisation of standard team meetings.
- Drafting and editing of regular project documents
- Liaising with relevant HODs and staff to deliver proposed activities and outputs
BBCMA’S Responsibilities:
BBCMA will provide the consultant with:
- Relevant briefing on the ESPMIN project and deliverable for the duration of the consultancy.
- All relevant ESPMIN programme strategy and priority related information
- Intellectual support and guidance in preparing required document
Expected output:
Successful implementation of the ESMPIN project for the duration of the consultancy
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities, Social Sciences or any related field
- A master’s degree will be an advantage.
- Strong writing and editing of reports capacities;
- Strong editorial judgment and substantial radio production experience, including production of audience participation formats.
- Proven ability to analyse and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and driving constant improvement in output.
- Strong experience in project management, including the drafting and review of logframes and deliverables, experience working with USAID and a demonstrated commitment to media and development
- Thorough understanding of best practices in project implementation and media training.
- Working experience on the management and implementation of Maternal and Child Health Care (preferred)
- Experience of operating effectively in difficult, highly politically sensitive and often fluid environments.
- Proven ability to analyse and critically evaluate editorial content;
- Identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content and driving constant improvement in output
- Evidence of high level editorial skills and thorough understanding of BBC editorial values
- Evidence of imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, particularly those with the widest possible audience appeal
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- A proven track record in the careful management of budgets.
- Experience in networking and relationship building
- Possess strong oral, written communication and presentation English skills (please note that this position requires the writing of technical documents regularly, subsequently, strong English writing skills are required).
- Be proficient in the use of relevant computer software, i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point, etc
Talk Your Own is a new weekly magazine programme produced by BBC Media Action. Each programme will cover governance issues in a exciting and ; contemporary style with the voices of those directly involved in national governance events, to provide listeners with a concise round-up of all the main governance issues and to provide a forum for listeners to hold those responsible to account.

The Producer will join the team working on Talk Your Own magazine programme. They will work alongside other teams across genres including, Magazine, Debate and Drama. The emphasis of the job is very much on storytelling and creativity as well as on craft and production skills
Carry out extensive research, gathering ideas for programme items, finding appropriate contributors along with new and archive material.
- Take part in creative development sessions – coming up with original ideas and building on existing ideas.
- Develop skills in content production across all platforms (radio, online, social media).
- Brief presenters and contributors.
- Record interviews in studio and on location.
- Operate technical equipment intended for self-operation – (audio recording equipment, online editing etc).
- Develop an understanding of audiences, and how different programmes respond to different audience needs.
- Ensure that all programme material is completed, ready for transmission or distribution in accordance with the agreed schedule.
- Prepare Production reports;
- Monitor and ensure that expenses are in compliance with production budget

The Assistant Producer/Presenter will join the team working on Talk Your Own magazine programme. The emphasis of the job is very much on presentation, storytelling, and creativity as well as on craft and production skills. We are looking for a candidate with presentation experience to co-host the programme. They will work alongside other teams across genres including Debate and Drama programmes.
Duties:
- To present/ Co present Talk Your Own in an authoritative, exciting and engaging manner
- To prepare for an interview specialists, reporters and variety of real voices around the country on a wide variety of governance related topics.
- Take part in creative development sessions – coming up with original ideas and building on existing ideas
- Record interviews in studio and on location.
- Develop skills in content production across all platforms (radio, online, social media).
- Brief presenters and contributors
- Carry out organization tasks appropriate to programme production, for example arranging locations
