Position: Consultant (Maternal and Child Nutrition)
Duration: 6 months, starting March 2012 (six months with possibility of extension as may be required subject to performance)
Duty Stations: Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara (1 consultant per state)

An International Organization, through an institutional recruitment agency, is looking for the following professionals to work on a health project in Northern Nigeria. Those who meet the criteria outlined below are encouraged to apply.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the management, direction and supervision of the institutional agency, the consultant shall work at the State/LGA level providing technical expertise for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM), community infant and young child feeding (CIYCF) activities at the state, LGA and community levels, provide support for Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) activities, nutrition surveillance at sentinel sites and rapid nutrition surveys including SMART surveys.
Major Tasks to be accomplished by the consultant include:
- Provision of support to the effort of the state governments in the selected states of Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara to promote child survival and development through surveillance, prevention and treatment (management) of malnutrition especially SAM among children under 5 years of age.
- Network with International NGOs including MSF, Save the children, ACF, Valid International, TISHIP and PRRIN MCH, partners and stakeholders at state, LGA and community levels to scale up the management of severe acute malnutrition and community infant and young child feeding activities, with detailed documentation of all implementing facilities (OTP), SC and Inpatient facilities) as well as facilitate leverage of resources and expansion
- Provide support for:
- The scale up of CMAM in assigned states
- Institutionalization and operationalization of effective systems for community and facility based management of severe acute malnutrition in children aged under-5 years in the selected high burden states
- Integration of IMAM with and scale up of C-IYCF implementation activities,
- The development and support of local capacity for management, supervision, monitoring and evaluation of progress for improved management of severe acute malnutrition programs.
- Institutionalization of sentinel nutrition surveillance sites at LGA level with regular data collation and quarterly analysis, interpretation and dissemination with the local, state and Zonal and national relevant agencies.
- The preparations and implementation of rapid nutrition (SMART) surveys.
- Assist with the planning , positioning and delivery of adequate and appropriate nutrition supplies to children and pregnant women in rapid response to emergencies
- Submit detailed monthly reports including data on C-IYCF, and CMAM activities (admission, default, cure and deaths as well as stock levels) using the appropriate data base.
- Articulate and submit quarterly workplan for approval
- Attend to any additional responsibility that will promote holistic and integrated delivery of child survival services in the assigned state
- The consultant will be expected to work closely with the state, LGAs, communities and traditional institutions under the management, direction and supervision of an institutional agency.
Minimum Qualifications, Competencies and Specialized Experience:
- University degree in Nutrition, Public health, Nursing, Biochemistry or related technical area
- At least three years’ experience, preferably in management of childhood malnutrition, promotion of C-IYCF, nutrition in emergency, basic nutrition programing with proven track record of working in developing countries and promotion of the management of severe acute malnutrition using local human and material resources.
- Proficiency in written and oral English language, good conceptual negotiating, communication and networking skills, as well as familiarity with working in a multicultural environment
- In-depth understanding of malnutrition and household food security from nutrition / public health point of view.
- Fluency in English and ability to understand and speak local language will be an advantage
- Willingness to work in the Held with partners for majority of the contract
Basic Competencies required:
- Good communication and advocacy skills
- Ability to implement, supervise, monitor and evaluate severe acute malnutrition and C-IYCF programmes.
- Ability to plan for nutrition assessment using SMART methods
- Drive for results in meeting targets and deadlines.
- Good analytical, team building and negotiating skills
- Computer skis, especially data analysis, report writing, knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and demonstrated skills with statistics analysis soft ware
- Demonstration of ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships with all parties.
