Research Clinical at Medical Reasearch Council Unit, The Gambia

MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s larges establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

 

MRC Keneba is situated within the village of Keneba, about 100 miles from the coast and the capital Banjul (3 hours by car). The MRC has carried out nutritional research in Keneba and the surrounding villages for over 60 years. Although the location of the Unit is remote and rural, considering its location, Keneba has excellent laboratory and other facilities necessary for high-quality field research and the delivery of a comprehensive primary health care service.

 

Position: Research Clinical

 

The Research Clinician will have dual responsibility for participating fully in the clinical care of patients in a primary healthcare setting and in the research agenda of the Nutrition Programme. S/he will work under the direct supervision of the Head of Clinical Services and the Head of Station at MRC Keneba.

 

Qualification

We seek someone with:

  • MBBS.
  • Minimum of FWACP Part 1 or equivalent in Internal
  • Medicine/Paediatrics.
  • Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Practical experience of health research in developing countries.
  • Experience of staff management.
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Good IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access).
  • Commitment to working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • A flexible and well-organized approach to work and an ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with patients.
  • Attentiveness to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Willingness to be on-call and work outside the normal working hours.
  • Willingness to live in a remote rural location.
  • Although not essential FWACP Part 2 would be an advantage

 

The salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for E1 is from 565, 328 Dalasi per annum to 774,188 Dalasi per annum  after tax. This converts to a salary range of $18,844 – $25,806 per  annum after tax using the current Dalasi/USD exchange rate. If you have your full FWACP, the salary will be in occupational group E2 at a salary range of between 789.111  Dalasis to  997, 956 per annum after tax. This converts to a salary range  of  $26, 303-$33, 265 per annum after tax using  the current  Dalasi/USD exchange  rate. Please note, however, that the salary package is paid in Dalasis and the USD figure quoted is  just given as a guide. The final salary on each occupation group will be dependent on qualifications and experience. For displaced staff the package will include rent-free furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and shipment of personal effects.

 

The appointment will be for 3 years in the first instance.
