Position: Research Clinician (Prinogam Trial)

 

MRC Unit, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council’s largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

 

The Disease Control & Elimination theme has recently secured a research grant entitled “Primaquine’s gametocytocidal efficacy in malaria asymptomatic carriers treated with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine”. This is a clinical trial aiming at determining the lowest possible dose of primaquine for clearing gametocytes in asymptomatic malaria carriers.

We are looking for a Research Clinician to coordinate the activities of the research grant. The post-holder will be required to conduct village surveys to identify asymptomatic malaria parasite carriers, randomisation of eligible and consenting infected individuals to one of the 4 study groups, monitor the 42 day post treatment follow up and document responses and adverse events.

 

 

We seek someone with:

  • MB, BS/MD or equivalent medical qualification.
  • FWACP Part 1 or equivalent.
  • Experience in malaria research.
  • Significant experience on research projects conducted in low-income countries.
  • Practical experience in the implementation and co-ordination of epidemiological studies or randomized trials
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and a willingness to work with others to overcome problems as and when they arise
  • Capacity to coordinate a complex group of studies.
  • Experience in data analysis.
  • Proven experience of managing staff.
  • Good record keeping skills.
  • Excellent written & spoken English
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Computer literacy in Windows – Word, Excel & statistical software.
  • The ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • The ability to deal sensitively with the study participants and the local population.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and be on-call

 

 

  • Although not essential, FWACP Part 2 or equivalent, M.Sc in Epidemiology/Public Health and experience in collaborative research involving laboratory determined outcomes would be an advantage.

 

 

The salary attached to the post is in occupational group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for E1 is from 565,328 Dalasis per annum to 774,188 Dalasis per annum after tax. This converts to a salary range of $17,131 – $23, 460 per annum ate tax using the current Dalasi/USD exchange rate. If you have your FWACP Part 2 the salary will be in Occupational Group E2 at a salary range of between 789,111 Dalasis to 997, 956 per annum after tax. This converts to a salary range of $23,912 – $30,241 per annum after tax using the current Dalasi/USD exchange rate. Please note, however, that the salary package is pad in Dalasis and the USD figure quoted is just given as a guide. The final salary on E1/E2 will be dependent on qualifications and experience.

 

For displaced staff the package will include finished accommodation, flights, flights, contribution to school fees for children and other benefits.

 

The appointment is for two years and is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

 

The salary will be in Occupational Group E1/E2 dependent on qualifications and experience.
